A new statewide helpline is making it easier for New Mexico residents to find reliable information about civil legal matters and court procedures. The New Mexico Courts HelpLine has been launched to assist individuals who need guidance when dealing with the state’s civil court system, particularly those handling legal matters without an attorney.
The service connects callers with trained staff who can answer questions about New Mexico courts and provide legal information. While staff members cannot provide legal advice, they can direct people to helpful resources and explain court-related processes.
Community members can receive assistance with court forms, filing requirements, court rules, and responses to lawsuits. The HelpLine also points callers to self-help videos and educational materials covering a range of civil legal topics. These include landlord-tenant housing disputes, consumer debt cases, divorce proceedings, and child custody matters.
According to Chief Justice Julie J. Vargas, “The HelpLine expands access to justice for the many people who represent themselves in civil court cases without the assistance of an attorney. Having a reliable source of legal information will help people navigate the complexities of court processes.”
Hours and Language Support
The HelpLine operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It also opens on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Staff assist in English and Spanish. Interpreters are available for Diné and other languages when needed.
The service also shares contact details for free and low-cost legal service providers, including legal aid groups. In addition, callers can learn about upcoming legal fairs where volunteer attorneys offer consultations.
